Overview

  Spherical Dryer is a relatively novel type of drying equipment. It can be used not only for drying, but also for mixing, granulation, and other processes. Compared with other drying equipment, it offers advantages such as wide material adaptability, high loading coefficient, good drying performance, dead-corner-free mixing, no residue during discharge, easy cleaning, and compliance with GMP requirements.
  The spherical dryer is a highly efficient enclosed drying device that integrates vacuum, heating, stirring, crushing, and cleaning functions. Its main body consists of an upper hemisphere and a lower hemisphere, with both the outer shell and inner cavity being perfectly spherical. The lower hemisphere can open and close along an inclined central axis and is secured to the upper hemisphere by a toothed flange. The equipment introduces the advantages of a spherical vessel—good pressure resistance, large surface area, and no dead corners in the inner cavity—into the drying process. The upper hemisphere is equipped with a stirring and crushing drive system, surrounded by various ports to meet process requirements. The spherical dryer can integrate multiple functions such as reaction, crystallization, solid-liquid separation, washing, and drying into one unit, and is equipped with Clean-in-Place (CIP) and Sterilize-in-Place (SIP) systems, complying with strict pharmaceutical production quality management standards such as cGMP and FDA.


Working Principle

  The spherical dryer utilizes heat conduction under vacuum to effectively mix and dry materials. Before operation, the lower hemisphere and the upper hemisphere are closed and locked. After the discharge valve is closed, material is fed through the feed valve. The heating system is then started, heating the material in all directions simultaneously through the jackets inside the upper and lower hemispheres as well as the hollow stirring shaft and paddles. At the same time, the vacuum system is started to reduce the pressure of the drying environment, allowing moisture or solvent in the material to evaporate at a lower temperature. The three-blade agitator operates continuously at a relatively high speed, constantly turning and mixing the material, while the crushing device operates synchronously to promptly break up any agglomerates that may form during drying. The water vapor or organic solvent vapor generated by evaporation is collected by the condensation system. After drying is completed, the material is discharged through the bottom valve.


Features

  High drying efficiency: its drying efficiency is 2 to 4 times that of a double-cone vacuum dryer and 5 to 10 times that of a drying oven.
   Uniform heating without dead corners: the combination of the spherical vessel and the three-blade agitator enables the material to be symmetrically stirred in all directions, eliminating the stirring dead corners commonly found in rake-type or conical dryers.
  Easy cleaning with no residue: the spherical structure is symmetrical in all directions from the center to the wall, so in theory only one spray ball installed at the center of the sphere is needed to clean the entire inner wall.
  Enclosed operation, safe and environmentally friendly: the equipment operates fully enclosed under vacuum, making it particularly suitable for processing flammable, explosive, or highly toxic products; the spherical shell has good pressure resistance and can effectively withstand possible pressure impacts from thermal decomposition or dust explosions.
  Adjustable parameters and intelligent control: stirring and crushing can achieve stepless speed regulation, and parameters such as vacuum degree and heating temperature can be automatically balanced and controlled.


Applications

  Spherical dryers have a wide range of applications and are mainly used for high-value-added products with stringent requirements for the drying environment. In the pharmaceutical industry, they are mainly used for low-temperature vacuum drying of pharmaceutical intermediates, active pharmaceutical ingredients (API), sterile powders, and biological products. In the fine chemical industry, they are suitable for processing flammable, explosive materials and materials requiring solvent recovery. In the food industry, they can be used for drying fresh foods that must not be contaminated, enzyme preparations, and other products. In addition, spherical dryers are also applied to the processing of liquid preparations, powders, granules, and paste-like materials in the electronics industry. For heat-sensitive materials, the equipment can perform low-temperature vacuum drying within a wide temperature control range of 30 to 135°C, effectively protecting the active ingredients of the materials. It is also well-suited for processes requiring the preparation of dry powder from mother liquor.
